The Dental Underwriter at Delta Dental of Idaho is responsible for executing a wide range of underwriting tasks, including rate analysis, Department of Insurance (DOI) and Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliance, regulatory form filings, and contract support management. In addition, this position will coordinate with third party actuaries and internal resources such as product managers, sales, IT and finance to ensure accuracy and timeliness in all underwriting activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Develop an understanding of dental terminology, dental benefits, risk assessment, underwriting guidelines, contract language and the underwriting process and procedures. 
  • Analyze and set rates for pool-related plans, individual, ACA (Affordable Care Act), self-insured (ASC) and experience rated groups, and perform special rating requests as they arise. 
  • Identify and complete group renewals, including pools, Administrative Services Contract (ASC), and experience rated groups. 
  • Recommend renewal rating and quote alternate options as needed. 
  • Collaborate with the sales team to ensure new business quotes are accurate and timely.
  • Review group termination requests for accuracy and to ensure contractual requirements are met.
  • Support Underwriting Assistant with approving new group applications, terminating groups, producer appointments or reassignments. 
  • May supervise Underwriting Assistant, including hiring, coaching, developing, and engaging employees. 
  • Embrace and utilize AI to improve processes and drive efficiency.
  • Develop a robust working knowledge of Proclaim and supporting software required to perform the underwriting and group setup activities. 
  • Coordinate with third party actuaries and finance to establish the IBNR reserves. 
  • Ensure regulatory and policy compliance by filing required rates and forms; adhering to DOI, CMS/ACA, and Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA) guidelines; supporting audits; and staying current on regulatory changes. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the organization's vision, mission, values, code of ethics, and compliance/security standards.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, math/statistics or equivalent experience required. 
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in insurance underwriting or a related industry. 
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with attention to detail and sound judgment. 
  • Experience with regulatory filings, rate analysis, and contract management.
  • Ability to prioritize, work with deadlines, and manage multiple tasks. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and ability to embrace new AI-enabled software tools to improve underwriting efficiency. 
  • Ability to use approved AI tools to extract, structure, and validate data from underwriting reports (including PDF-based outputs and ProClaim reporting) to reduce manual re-keying and support renewal rate analysis. 
  • Ability to apply AI-assisted analysis to identify renewal rate drivers, trends, and variances, including reconciling ProClaim outputs with Accounting/financial outputs and flagging anomalies for follow-up. 
  • Demonstrated responsible AI use in a regulated/confidential environment, including validating outputs for accuracy and following compliance/security standards when handling sensitive information.
