Position Overview

KIRO Newsradio and MyNorthwest.com are looking for an innovative Multi-Media Journalist with strong radio news reporting skills and a digital-first mindset. This role is perfect for someone skilled in producing captivating content for web and video platforms, while maintaining a robust capability in radio journalism. We seek a well-informed, well-connected individual who is passionate about creating original reporting that resonates with our Puget Sound-area audience. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, proficient in story development, source cultivation, and has an ability to contribute to the regional news agenda.

Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion.

• This position is an onsite role that requires the employee to regularly work at our Seattle site.

What You Will Do:

Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Prioritize the creation of digital and video content, focusing on originality and regional relevance, without compromising the quality of radio news reporting.
• Develop and tailor news stories for web and video platforms, ensuring proficiency in producing compelling radio news segments.
• Craft engaging, AP-style articles for MyNorthwest.com, and produce captivating video content for various digital platforms, including social media.
• Exhibit versatility in presenting stories across multiple mediums, including radio segments, in-depth web articles, and video reports.
• Engage a diverse audience through participation in talk shows across the political spectrum, with a conversational and compelling style.
• Enterprise news stories with a digital-first approach, while consistently demonstrating impactful radio news reporting skills.
• Cultivate and maintain sources to stay at the forefront of the competitive news landscape.
• Produce and deliver objective news content that appeals to a broad audience across digital, video, and radio platforms.
• Write swiftly, clearly, and accurately adapting style for newscasts, talk shows, web articles, and video scripts.
• Utilize social media effectively to present and promote stories.
• Remain flexible with work hours, including availability for breaking news coverage on weekends and holidays.
• Communicate effectively with management and colleagues, ensuring cohesive coordination across various platforms.
• Seamlessly records and edits audio 
• Concise, conversational and accurate on-air presentation in newscasts and on shows 

Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:

• In-depth understanding of journalistic standards, ethics, and principles.
• Demonstrated ability to craft and deliver stories for broadcast, showcasing quality on-air presentation skills in radio news.
• Strong background in digital journalism, with experience in video reporting.
• A proactive, inquisitive approach to story development.
• Competency in operating studio equipment and technical proficiency with digital tools.
• Robust news judgment, especially in local news, with a focus on digital-first content.
• Outstanding writing, editing, and production skills across various formats, including radio.
• Experience in on-air newscast delivery and reporting (radio broadcast and/or video), with a strong emphasis on digital storytelling.
• Able to write compelling and factual news copy / web scripts. 
• Ability to find, develop and deliver compelling news stories daily 
• Outstanding writing, editing, and production skills 
• Able to take direction/feedback and incorporate into work 
• Computer-literate with the technical ability to operate studio equipment 
• Understands social media platforms and has the ability to contribute to various platforms 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field.
• A minimum of two years in journalism, with a significant focus on radio, video, and digital content.
• Familiarity with regional issues and political dynamics.
• Ability to write and produce news stories for digital platforms, while engaging in extended discussions for diverse talk show formats.
• Proficiency in video production and on-camera performance.

Physical Demands

• Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
• Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
• Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
• In breaking news situations, ability to walk up to two miles.

Compensation

$30.00 - $43.27 an hour

Hourly rate to be determined by multiple factors including but not limited to evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with market data. The pay range provided here spans multiple levels of this job.
